Spring Is (Almost) in the Air

Even while the days don’t quite feel like spring yet, you can still get ready:

First, you want to make sure any bulbs or tubers you have been storing are not currently rotting or drying out. To check, you first want to squeeze the bulb to make sure it is not mushy. If it is, the bulb is no longer good to use. In addition, if the bulb is brittle when squeezed, it is most likely dried out and no longer good to use.

Second, the winter season can certainly bring chilly temperatures to our area. Check to see if any of the cacti in your yard have been damaged by frost this winter season. If so, trim off any of the damage caused by frost so that you can start fresh this spring.

When it comes to fruit trees in your yard, you want to check them for aphids and fertilize them, as needed.

Finally, when it comes to planting for the spring season, you can go ahead and plant perennials, including

  • Peonies
  • Day lilies
  • Black-eyed Susans
  • Hostas

Ornamental grasses like pampas grass and deer grass can also now be planted. But be prepared to cover these bulbs and grasses if a cold snap is expected.
